Famed baritone, Professor Liao Changyong, assumed the post as president of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music on January 8, 2019.
Previous president, Lin Zaiyong, resigned from the additional post while remaining in his position as the school’s Party secretary.
Liao, as a national Level-2 professor discipline instructor and doctoral supervisor at the college, is a deputy to the National People’s Congress; a member of the NPC Committee of Education, Science, Culture and Health; and vice chairman of both the Chinese Musicians’ Association and the Shanghai Musician Association.
He studied at the SHCM from 1988, under renowned music educators Prof. Luo Wei and Prof. Zhou Xiaoyan, getting his master’s degree in 1995. He went on to win multiple international awards, at home and abroad.
He then impressed the world audience and judges by winning three top vocal music competitions between 1996 and 1997 and was even the first Asian to appear on some of the stages.
Liao also performed around the world in collaboration with premium international symphony orchestras in Washington, New York, London, Paris, Vienna and Armstrong, presenting dozens of operas, including “Carmen”, “Faust” and “La Traviata”, and hundreds of concerts.
