Shanghai Conservatory of Music and its Dance and Music major have been inscribed on the country’s list for developing world-class universities and first-class disciplines, according to the Ministry of Education.
The so-called “Double First-Class” initiative is a significant national strategy of Central Committee of CPC and the State Council to develop world first-class higher education and disciplines after the “211 Project” and “985 Project”, which aims to elevate China’s comprehensive education strength as well as its international competitiveness.
SHCM was the first in the country to start professional higher education in music. It established the music teaching and discipline systems in China and is so far the only music school nationwide to have three First-class disciplines.
The conservatory sets out to build up advanced music teaching in the world and train professionals with innovative mind and global view.
To reach its goal, the conservatory has adopted nine measures in promoting music composing and theory, music performance, musicology and music application as well as in establishing He Lvting Advanced Research Institute for Chinese Music, an international music talent base and the joint institutes with Royal College of Music and Berklee College of Music.
