The Overseas Students Office and the Graduate Students Affairs Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music jointly organized a cultural performance activity named “Seeking the Sounds Along the Silk Road” in December 2016 in a bid to strengthen cultural exchange between Chinese and overseas students and introduce the music along the Silk Road into the conservatory.

The activity consisted of two parts.

The first part was an exhibition held on December 14 to introduce history and culture of countries along the Silk Road. Students of six countries, including China, Mongolia, Armenia, Italy, Malaysia and Indonesia, displayed folk musical instruments, clothes, architecture and food of their countries.

SHCM President Lin Zaiyong talked with the students, tasted the food and listened to introductions of the culture of different countries. SHCM Deputy Party Secretary Liu Yan announced the opening of the activity and officials of the International Exchange Office and other departments also attended the activity.

The second part was a cultural performance held at Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Auditorium on December 19. More than 300 overseas students from the SHCM and other local universities enjoyed the performance.

Overseas students from countries along the Silk Road performed music works with their folk musical instruments to demonstrate the splendid culture along the Silk Road.

The activity was an effort to follow China’s Belt and Road initiative and enhance mutual understanding among different countries through music.
