the IPEA Officially Joined the IMC

Recently, the International Percussion Education Association (IPEA), co-founded by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and other 14 world's leading universities in the world, has officially joined the International Music Council (IMC). President of the IMC, Alfons Karabuda expressed his congratulations to SHCM. He believed that the IPEA would play an important role in music field in the world and looked forward for further cooperation.

As the organizer of IPEA, SHCM has made this competition an international grand event of percussion music in the world through its efforts in recent years. Each year, in the golden autumn season of October, percussion masters and players from all over the world gather together in SHCM. A series of masterclasses, education forums, concerts, and the competition are held during the activity.

The International Music Council (IMC) is the world's leading membership-based professional organisation dedicated to the promotion of the value of music in the lives of all peoples. IMC's mission is to develop sustainable music sectors worldwide, to create awareness about the value of music, to make music matter throughout the fabric of society,and to uphold basic music rights in all countries.

IMC was founded in 1949 at the request of the Director-General of UNESCO as a non-governmental advisory body to the agency on musical matters. It is based at UNESCO headquarters in Paris and functions today independently as an international NGO official partner of UNESCO. In the course of its existence, IMC has developed into a highly influential network advocating for appropriate policies and practices aimed at strengthening the work of its members and partners worldwide. IMC's network is present in 150 countries on all continents, with national music councils and international, regional and national music organisations as well as specialised organisations in the field of arts and culture. IMC members of honour are chosen among the world's outstanding professionals, educators, performers and composers. Through its members, IMC has direct access to over 1000 organisations and 200 million persons eager to develop and share knowledge and experience on diverse aspects of musical life.

SHCM has a profound relationship with the International Music Council. In September 1979, He Luting, the Dean of SHCM, led a delegation of Chinese musicians to Australia to attend the 18th session of the IMC. This was the first time that China was invited to attend this council. At the meeting, the Chinese Musicians Association (CMA) became a national member of the IMC and the only Chinese member of IMC. In 1983, Mr. He was elected as an honorary member of the IMC. In 2021, the IPEA became the first international music academic organization in the IMC which was headquartered in China.

Founded in 2014, the IPEA is jointly founded by SHCM and 14 top music institutions, including the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Dedanse de Paris, Hochschule für Musik, the Theater und Medien Hannover, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam,the Eastman School of Music, and the Yale School of Music. IPEA aims to promote the development of percussion education and music exchanges between various international music colleges and percussion education institutions. As Initiating organization of IPEA, SHCM has done a lot of efforts and promotion work for Chinese percussion in the world. Since 2016, IPEA has held an International Percussion competition in China every year.


President of IPEA, Dean of SHCM, Professor Liao Changyong expressed that the establishment of the IPEA is to unite and drive more forces to produce ideas, works, talents on the global scale, making more contributions to the prosperity and development of mankind.

The executive director of IPEA, Professor Zhou Xiong says that IPEA will make good use of the global resources of IMC to promote the development of world percussion music.
