First Chinese vocal music contest concludes

Sun Zhuohan from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM) won first prize and 100,000 yuan ($14,377) at the first Chinese Art Song International Vocal Music Contest held at SHCM on Saturday, Shanghai Observer reported Sunday.

The competition attracted more than 600 competitors from around the world, with four foreign competitors from the US, Australia and Costa Rica entering the semi-finals singing art songs in Chinese. Aaron Scarberry from the US reached the finals. 

The contest also attracted millions of netizens online and will be held every two years from now on as a special event of the SHCM.

Liao Changyong, Chinese tenor and chairman of the jury, said that he hopes the proportion of foreign competitors will gradually increase in the future.
