Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong and Vice Mayor Shi Guanghui visited the Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music on August 10 and inspected Ai Lu and other heritage architectures there.
Located at No.9 Dongping Road, Ai Lu, or House of Love in Chinese, is the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling. The house is now partly used by the Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
During the inspection tour, the city leaders listened to a briefing on special measures adopted for protection of Ai Lu and other historical architectures in the school.
Ying said that protection for these historic buildings should focus on the big picture and a long-term mechanism is needed for the campus construction, so as to better preserve the original structures as well as improve the use efficiency of them.
A seminar was held after the inspection, discussing better approaches of blending the buildings with the historical street landscape and making the most of the teaching facilities within the space.
