President Lin Zaiyong of Shanghai Conservatory of Music led a delegation to visit Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at University of Melbourne, Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney and School of Music at University of Auckland from April 19 to 26.

Lin first came to Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, learned about the campus expansion project and toured the class and rehearsal sessions. He then had a pleasant talk with Dean Barry Conynham concerning the two school’s future cooperation on student study and performance exchange as well as cultural projects involving Chinese and Australian music.

Chinese music is a part of and profoundly influenced by world music. In the context Shanghai Conservatory of Music is responsible for spreading Chinese music across more boundaries, said Lin at the meeting. Meanwhile, Melbourne, the cultural center of Oceania would be an ideal place to carry out the cooperation.

Dean Conynham echoed Lin’s remarks and would like to see more practical progress from SHCM.

President Lin also visited Sydney Conservatorium of Music and signed a memorandum of understanding with its dean Professor Anna Reid in terms of working together in the fields of original operas, folk music, jazz music and student bands. Agreements on student exchange would be placed on agenda later.

The final destination of the tour was set at the School of Music at University of Auckland, where heads of the two schools exchanged ideas on curriculum exchange projects in the future.
