Wang Rui, deputy Party secretary and vice president of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, attended the 5th Summit of Pacific Alliance of Music Schools held in University Southern California Thornton School of Music from April 3 to 7.
The summit gathered principals and representatives from 13 music academies in countries including China, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
This year the summit focused on the localization in course design and mainly discussed about the balance between tradition and innovation as well as how to keep up with the fast-growing social need in musical education.
Wang briefed the meeting about SHCM’s core value in teaching, disciplines and curriculum and introduced the conservatory’s international course of music and dance as well as practice in course reform, performances and social service.
For the alliance to play a bigger role in enhancing international cooperation, it suggested a multi-lateral conversation mechanism be built to promote international programs like student exchange and teaching staff visits so as to upgrade modern music education level.
Next summit will be held in School of Music, Seoul National University in April of 2019.
SHCM delegation was also invited to visit University of British Columbia on April 9. The two parties had a friendly and in-depth talk on composition, folk music and instruments. Both showed interest in further collaboration in the future.
