Admission Regulations for Shanghai Summer School 2018

Shanghai Summer School 2018 -Chinese Traditional Music Program, a Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship Program hosted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM), will be held at the SHCM in June and July 2018.It aims at better promoting the international education of the SHCM through more diverse Chinese culture experience program for international students.

I. Theme

Since 2011, the Shanghai Summer School -Chinese Traditional Music Program has been successfully held for seven consecutive years and achieved good results. Therefore, we will further extend the Chinese music elements to different music forms. The 2018 edition of this event will feature the theme of Chinese Traditional Instrument Erhu, Chinese Traditional Vocal Music and Chinese Piano Works.

In this Summer School, we will invite many prestigious educators, professional performers and music teachers in the above-mentioned fields to deliver a comprehensive program that combines learning, appreciation and experience for international students.

II. Time and Contents

1. Time: June 11, 2018 — July 6, 2018 (four weeks)

2. Master Class

a) Advanced Class: Prestigious professors of Chinese Traditional Instrument Erhu, Chinese traditional vocal music and piano Works will deliver open classes and young performers of the SHCM will give training courses for students. They will impart the traditional performing techniques, and help students to develop and improve new performing skills of Chinese traditional music quickly. Vocal music and Chinese Piano Works courses will focus mainly on Chinese music works.

b) Beginner’s Class: Basic performing techniques will be taught by young performers of the SHCM in order to improve the students’ understanding of Chinese traditional music.

3. Lectures: Lectures on topics including “The Art of Chinese Music”, “The Aesthetics of Music” and “Chinese Culture” will be delivered by reputed scholars.

4. Cultural Activities: We will organize students to visit authentic musical and cultural sites in Shanghai, such as the Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments, He Luting Concert Hall and Shanghai Concert Hall. Students will also have the chance to experience the cultural and musical life in Shanghai and surrounding areas.

III. Quota and General Application Requirements

Shanghai Summer School 2018 — Chinese Traditional Music Program will enroll 20 students in total. Students enrolled will receive a scholarship which covers the fee for the application, tuition, accommodation, activities, teaching materials and comprehensive insurance.

The Summer School opens only to non-Chinese citizens outside China between the age of 16 and 50.

The applicants will be selected by the organizing committee based on the application materials they submitted and the list of students enrolled will be published on the website of the International Students Office of Shanghai Conservatory of Music:

IV. Application Procedures

1. Application Period: March 15, 2018 to April 15, 2018

2. Documents required for application:

a) Application Form: “2018 Shanghai Summer School Traditional Chinese Music Program-Application Form”

b) Passport: A photocopy or scanned copy of the photo page

c) Resume

d) Three passport-size photos

e) Advanced Class applicants should also submit CD or DVD recordings (two pieces of songs), or send the recordings of two songs by email to 2205542773@qq.com.

3. Fees

The fees for application, tuition, accommodation, activities, teaching materials and comprehensive insurance will be covered by the scholarship, yet the meal costs, international airfares and local transportation shall be borne by themselves.

4. Application procedures

a) Download the application form from the website http://iso.shcmusic.edu.cn and fill the form in Chinese or English as required.

b) All documents should be sent by post or by email.

c) Shanghai Conservatory of Music will review the application documents, and send by post the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China to qualified applicants (Applicants are required to provide accurate address information and phone number on the application form to ensure that you will receive the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China). Admitted students must procure a Student Visa (X1 or X2 Visa) before entering China for this program.

d) Students enrolled should register at Shanghai Conservatory of Music on the date stated in the Admission Notice. Those who fail to register on time should report in advance to the ISO of  SHCM for its consent, or it will be deemed as a waiver.

e) All the application documents submitted will not be returned.
