Chinese Traditional Music Program of Shanghai Conservatory of Music

Shanghai Summer School 2014(Chinese Traditional Music Program )- A Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship Program hosted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music will be held at Shanghai Conservatory of Music from June 23 to July 18, 2014.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Since 2011, we have held Shanghai Summer School (Chinese Traditional Music Program) annually and achieved good results. On this basis, we will held 2014 Shanghai Summer School (Chinese Traditional Music Program) with the theme of traditional Chinese instruments Pipa, Liuqin and Yangqin.

Pipa, Liuqin and Yangqin are widespread traditional Chinese plucked stringed instruments. They have a long history and are popular among Chinese and people from other countries. In this Summer School, we will invite many professional performers and educators of Pipa, Liuqin and Yangqin to create a comprehensive integrated curriculum of teaching, appreciation and experience for international students.

Arrangement:

This program has Beginner’s Class (Time: July 7 to July 18) and Advanced Class (Time: June 23 to July 11). Each class has five parts:

1. Master Class: A) Advanced Class: prestigious professors of Pipa, Liuqin and Yangqin performances will give open class and young performers of SCM will give training course for each student. The classes provide an opportunity for the students to communicate in person with the masters to discuss and study the Pipa, Liuqin and Yangqin techniques in order to improve the performing accomplishments and make progress in their performing techniques. B) Beginner’s Class: Young performers of SCM will teach students the basic techniques of performance through which to improve their understanding of Chinese traditional culture.

2. Lectures: in the Summer School, prestigious scholars will give lectures about Chinese music art, music aesthetics, Chinese culture and other related knowledge.

3. Chinese Language Courses: students of the Summer School will take the Music Chinese courses to learn music terms and other related knowledge.

4. Activities: all students will have the opportunity to visit typical musical and cultural sites such as music instrument factory, Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments, He Luting Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall and etc.

Qualifications for Summer School Students:

Beginner’s Class will enroll 20 students, including 10 scholarship winners and 10 self-support students. Advanced Class will enroll 20 students, including 10 scholarship winners and 10 self-support students. For scholarship winners, the scholarship covers the application fee, tuition, activity fee, material fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive insurance fee. Self-support students will have to pay for the application fee, tuition, activity fee, material fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive insurance fee.

All the Summer School students should be non-Chinese citizens, over 16 and under 60, in good health.  Scholarship applicants should apply from abroad.

The scholarship list of Beginner’s Class will be evaluated by application orders and the scholarship list of Advanced Class will be evaluated by application documents. The Organizing committee will announce the list of scholarship winners and self-support students on the website of International Students Office of Shanghai Conservatory of Music: http://www.shcmusic.edu.cn/html/lxs/.

e: Audition recording CD or DVD (2 pieces of songs), 2 pieces of songs can be sent by email

3. Fees:

A.Scholarship winners: the scholarship covers application fee, tuition, activity fee, material fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive insurance fee. Transportation fees are not included.

B. Self-support students: The fees are RMB4000 which cover application fee, tuition, activity fee, material fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive insurance fee. Transportation fees are not included.

4. Application procedures:

A. Students can download application form to fill in.  Please fill in the form according to the requirement.

B. All documents can be submitted by email or sent by post. (passport copy is the page with photo.)

C. After evaluation, applicants will receive the Admission Notice sent through email by Shanghai Conservatory of Music. (Applicants are required to leave email address and phone number on the application form for us to contact and send Admission Notice). Applicants may procure a visa (such as tourist visa) valid for at least 30 days, otherwise they will be responsible for all the possible consequences caused by invalid visa.

D. Entrance, registration and tuition payment should be finished at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music according to the registration period stated on the Admission Notice. Students that will not register within the time limit should inform and get the permission from International Students Office in advance. Otherwise they will be considered as giving up the program.

E. Application documents and tuition fee are non-refundable, payable in cash on or before the registration period.
