University of Michigan officials Jason Geary, Stephen Shipps and Joseph Lam, in charge of the graduate school, international student recruitment and the UM Confucius Institute respectively, visited the Shanghai Conservatory of Music on April 11, 2016.
They were received by SHCM Vice President Yang Yandi, Graduate School Director Zhang Wei, Dean of Musicology Department Zhao Weiping, Orchestra School Director Li Jiwu, and Chen Xiaoli and Le Yi of the International Exchange Office.
Yang and Geary introduced their schools and academic programs at the meeting. Yang gave some suggestions for student and faculty exchanges and cooperative education programs.
Stephen Shipps also gave a violin lesson at the SHCM Orchestra School the next day and on April 13 Geary gave Chinese students a lecture, titled "The Meaning of Music and Mahler's First Symphony."
